County Modern Football
Posted 14 January 2022site addition
I spotted two photos on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page. Now included in the 1960s gallery. This one was posted by Phil Coates, who is on the front row, a 1961 Malton County Modern football team, with Mr "Sid" Simmons. Full names more or less provided by Facebook comments, though there is a little uncertainty about some identifications.
County Modern Hockey
Posted 14 January 2022site addition
A photo of a 1964 Malton County Modern Hockey team, posted by Moira Watson on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page. Again some names have been posted as comments. I am never sure whether for women people are using schoolnames or married names.

TV celebrity chef James Martin visited us in October 2006, as part of a new series he was making for BBC TV. James was a student at the school in the 1980s. He spent a couple of days with a TV crew filming in the school.
There is more about James Martin's visit on the site.

Pat Lovegrove emailed to alert me to the passing of Peter and Dorothy Burrow in recent months. Peter was a science and rural studies teacher at the school 1971-1988.
The photo is of Dorothy with Hugh Spencer; the next is of Peter with John Whitehead, both at the Centenary reunion, 2011.
County Modern Trip
Posted 2 February 2022site addition
A number of photos of Malton County Modern groups not previously seen have appeared on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page. This has prompted a re-working of photo gallery pages, and there is now a page dedicated to photographs from Malton County Modern, during its brief existence from 1958 - 1971.
Bible Studies group 1940s
Posted 2 February 2022site addition
A photo from Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page has been added to the collection of Malton National School page. This is of the Malton Bible Studies group in the 1940s, outside the old Naional School in St Michael's Street. It is not clear whether the group acually belonged to the school, or if they just gathered for the photo.

Julia Rowsby found a picture of her dad with four 6th form girls, probably from 1959. Howard Campion thinks the girls are Pat Piercey, Anthea Critchley, and Margaret Bretherick, plus one other? There are many more photographs from the 1950s in the 1950s gallery.
The "Middle" Block
Posted 9 March 2022site addition
The new block consisting of four new classrooms, is in full operation. This is situated on the wingpath and goes some way to bridging the gap between east and west wings. Good to see a hedge planted around the building, replacing the one that had to be cut down for construction.
Dr Gordon Walsh
Posted 18 March 2022e-mail
I was delighted to be able to visit the School today, and meet Dr Gordon Walsh, who was visiting with his daughters Heather and Ali. Gordon was a pupil at the Grammar School in 1936. He later wrote down some of his memories of the Grammar School 1936 - 1942.

Posted 10 April 2022e-mail
Gordon Walsh, with the help of his daughters, sent me five photos of his earlier days. This one is a studio portrait of Gordon by Massers, when he was aged 17. Other photographs are on a page about Gordon Walsh in the Memories section of the site.
Easter concert 2009
Posted 29 May 2022site upgrade
The Easter show in 2009 was A Night on Broadway, where songs, dances and comedy acts took their inspiration from musicals and stage shows. As always there was a wide variety of ages contributing, from across the whole age range of the school.

A play in a week production at the end of the summer term, July 2009. Some photos are available, but sadly I cannot find a programme or cast list to identify all the performers. Can anyone help?

As part of the gradual upgrading of the website, the main 1980s gallery is now in the new format. So are the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 1950s galleries. This picture is of the cast of Oklahoma in 1981.
1982-2022 reunion
Posted 20 August 202240 year reunion
Sarah Watkins (Sarah Jones) is organising a 40-year-on reunion for students who left in 1982. Sarah tells me it is on 3 September 2022, and she is expecting around 25 - 30 people to attend. She would love to hear from anyone who would like to come along. If you are interested, or just want to catch up with Sarah, please contact through this website in the first instance, and I will pass on your contact details to Sarah.
1988 Victor Ludorem
Posted 22 August 2022Victor Ludorem
Jason Hazelwood emailed to mention he had been browsing the website with his wife Lorna (Robinson), and noted that he was Victor Ludorem in 1988, winning the 100m, 200m and long jump for Seven house. This means that Simon Ewbank and Richard Woolley were winners on 1987, not 1988 as previously published on the Sports Day Victors page. Was anyone else out there a Victor or Victrix? Were these from Year 10 (they were when I was teaching at the school.)

Alan Teasdale was a pupil at the County Modern and the Grammar School 1965 - 1971. He died in April 2021. Following recent communications about him from contemporary Stephen Flaherty and Alan's daughter Chelsea, there is a brief tribute page with a few photos now on the website.
