Posted on 17 January 2023 Another gem from Ally Nurre (Alison Ware). This is almost certainly from the 1965 photo album - the background and format match other photos in the album. It is probably the Under 15 Hockey team of that year. Ally remembers that 4 of the 11 were from her village, West Heslerton: Alison and Rosey Ware, Judy Harrison and Carol Wakeley. She aso thinks the team would be from 3 different year groups, 2nd, 3rd and 4th forms. More details from Ally in the Memories section
Posted on 28 January 2023 I am working through scanning some documents I found when clearing out a cupboard. I found a 6th form prospectus from 1988. About 30 pages of typed and duplicator-produced Courier font text, a far cry from the glossy full colour printed production today. It includes a staff list, introduction, description of each A level subject offered, plus the Foundation programme, and some notes on previous students' success. John Gresswell was the head at the time, and Eddie Lucas the Head of Sixth Form. There were four sixth form tutors - John Dunstan, Dave Ewing, Chris Lawes and Keith Williams.
The full 1988 Sixth Form Prospectus is available as a pdf.
Volume 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of The New Maltonian are now available on the site. Volume 4 is missing - does anyone have a copy? I believe the mgazine did not continue beyond volume 6.
Posted on 6 February 2023 Philip Surtees sent a couple of emails, filling in some names from the 1971 Malton Grammar School photo album, and later the 1969 photo album. The photo shown here is Mr Greaves' Form, 5A, in which Philip features 4th from the left on the back row. There are still a few names missing - can anyone help?
Posted on 6 February 2023 Paul Surtees offered some information about Don Childs, who was an exchange teacher from Nebraska at Malton Grammar School, 1968-69. He appears on a 1969 photo of the school orchestra. "He was an enthusiastic runner, often seen in his hoodie running around Malton. There is an annual 5 mile memorial run in his home state of Nebraska." He was a pilot, and died in a plane crash with his wife in August 1976. There is an obituary for him on Our Departed Friends, maintained by Nebraska State Bandmasters Association. I have added this to the Tributes page on this website.
Posted on 14 February 2023 I spotted that Dave Preston had scanned the entire Maltonian magazine of September 1970, and put it all on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page. I took the liberty of copying the pages from here and assembling them into a pdf. As a result the 1970 Maltonian is now available on this website.
A few other Maltonian magazines have also been scanned or transribed.
Posted on 16 February 2023 Ally Nurre (Alison Ware) has been in touch with a few more notes from America.. This time memories of her life after leaving Malton School, with periods in Surrey, Honduras, Oxford, Kentucky, Northampton, Minnesota, and finally back to Kentucky.
Posted on 19 February 2023 I spotted this 1975 Sports Day picture on M & N Memories once again, this time posted by Jim Rooney. Its appearance solicited a few more names to be added, mainly with thanks to Shaun Williamson. There is a conflict in naming the boy 7th from left - is it David Knaggs or Andrew Thorpe? And 2nd from right, peeping through, Andrew Powell or Isaac Power?
Posted on 19 March 2023 With Comic Relief back in operation after a period missing because of Covid, I thought I would seek out some photos from past events. 12 years ago the school had a beautiful sunny day on Comic Relief Day 2011, when Mr Bruce and the Brucettes led the dancing in the quad to the Cha Cha Slide; staff and students taking part.
Posted on 28 March 2023 As Easter approaches, I thought I would look back 12 years to Easter 2011, when the Easter themed concert was Disney Night. Music and dance this time, mainly organised by Mrs Kettlewell and Miss Langdale. There were a few numbers reflecting the recent visit of the Swedish exchange musicians tagged on to the end. Photos from Disney Night, plus a programme, are now available on the site.
Posted on 20 April 2023 Prompted by an email from Juliet Baker about Moira Wood, Head of Home Economics 1976-1986, I have updated some pictures sent in by Richard Peters in 2003 to include 4 of a staff play, in which Moira and Richard took part. There are also pictures of a 1985 ski trip in the collection.
Posted on 29 May 2023 Leavers' proms must be coming up sometime around now, which prompted me to look back to Year 13 proms 1999 - 2012. In those days they happened in early May, before exams started, nowadays I think they come after exams, so probably late June. I have created a new index page to the proms, and added new pictures from 2012, 2011 and 2010. I will work my way backwards through the years in the coming weeks.
Posted on 4 June 2023 Continuing the update and addition of photos of leavers' proms to the gallery, the Sixth Form Prom from 2009, at Sandburn Hall.
Posted on 11 June 2023 More updates to the photos of leavers' proms to the Year 13 leavers' gallery, the Sixth Form Prom from 2008, at The Old Lodge, Malton.
Posted on 15 June 2023 In June 2023 David Hutchinson posted a grainy photo of Yorkshire CCC cricketer and former Malton Grammar School student Vic Wilson on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page. This prompted me to update the pages on this site offering tributes to Vic, and some memories of MGS that Vic sent me in 2002. I have also found a few more pictures of him, on ESPNcricinfo and a general internet search, but most have copyright on them so I am wary of sharing them here.
Posted on 25 June 2023 More updates to the photos of leavers' proms to the Year 13 leavers' gallery, the Sixth Form Prom from 2007, at The Downe Arms, Wykeham.
Posted on 15 July 2023 Another photo from 1973 added to the Other Schools page. Once again spotted on M & N Memories, posted by Kevin Wade in June 2023. Some names are offered on that page by Helen Paylor. The photo is significant to Malton School in that the headmistress in the photo is Mrs Hanson, wife of George Hanson, the headmaster at Malton County Modern throughout it's life. I won't repeat any of the memories of Mrs Hanson on Facebook, some are not very fond.
Posted on 15 July 2023 Another photo added to the Other Schools page, where you will find suggested names for those in the photo. This one is of Wentworth Street Infants again, but in 1973 (75?), spotted on M&N Memories.
Posted on 15 July 2023 Another photo added to the Other Schools page, where you will find many names for those in the photo. It is of Wentworth Street Infants 1935, spotted on M&N Memories. Quite a few names provided, some of who would go on to work at Malton School - Wilson Train, John Cook, Ken Hopwood to name but 3 that I recognise.
Posted on 17 July 2023 Another Maltonians magazine has been scanned and added to The Maltonians page. This one is from July 1931, issue No. 44. This one is just 16 pages, mainly reports on sporting and musical activities, arrivals and departures, the School's 21st birthday party, Random Ramblings to York by M.H.L., and O.M.A. notes, including a report on the Spring Reunion.
Posted on 25 July 2023 I visited the School on the last day of term, to say farewell to my old colleague, senior teacher Jon Steel, on his retirement after 21 years at Malton. The end of school gathering was in the West Wing Hall, where I was pleased to see honours boards on the walls listing head boys and girls, head teachers, and house competition winners over the years - a project talked about for a number of years which has finally come to fruition. I have put some photos of these on the Malton School plaques page. There are pages on the site on the House competition, head boys and girls, and head teachers. I have also updated these pages to the new website format.
Posted on 1 August 2023 Adrian Everitt emailed from Lima, Peru, with some additional information about the 1983 staff play that I update on 20 April (see below). Adrian was a teacher at Malton School 1980-84, and is now Head of Upper School at Cambridge College in Lima. I have added his information to the page in the 1980s gallery. - Alex Joannidis directed, and John Christal (Deputy Head) took part, along with a sixth form girl whose name as yet eludes Adrian.
Adrian also thinks he may have a copy of the missing New Maltonian Volume 4, and if so he will scan and send it.
Posted on 8 August 2023 True to his word, Adrian Everitt sent me a scan of the New Maltonian Number 4, from April 1983. It includes a review written by Alison Burnett of Hay Fever mentioned below. This is the girl in the play whose name eluded Adrian. This completes the set of six New Maltonians that were published between January 1982 and December 1984. The magazine has the usual content - Headmaster's note, a report on Maltonian reunions at the Green Man by Mr Mason, sports reports, reviews of concerts attended, jokes, quiz, skiing in Scotland, rifle club, life at Oxford University, creative writing, and a few adverts.
Posted on 20 August 2023 Brian Botterill left a comment on Facebook about this photo, which he sent me back in 2002, but I had lost the names of the group. He lists the names of the group of lads enjoying a drink: (L to R): Peter Hill, Philip Sharp, Brian Botterill, Dennis Johnson, Roger Scott. The photo is in the 1950s gallery. Brian also spotted his brother Alec on the 1952 Class III photo in the National School gallery.
Posted on 23 August 2023 Continuing the updates to Year 13 leavers prom pictures, I have managed to find some photos from 2005 at The Feathers, Helmsley. I wasn't there (absent unwell) and am not sure who took the photos. Perhaps Carol Peters?.
Posted on 2 September 2023 A photo I haven't seen before, spotted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page , posted by John Tolson. I am a little confused by left and right positions on people's comments, but my best summary of them is: Back: Raymond Craggs, xxx, David Raines, Brian Goforth (PE teacher), John McMurren, Mike Walker. Middle: xxx, Nigel Watson, Derek Cuthbertson (with ball), John Tolson, Andre Dixon. Front: Peter Myers, xxx, Terry Pugh. Someone also mentioned Mike Inkley?
Posted on 2 September 2023 A photo I haven't seen before, spotted on Malton and Norton Memories, posted by John McMurren in 2018. L to R back row: Roy Foster, David Carver, Kenneth Halstead, Robert King, Andrew Menzies, Peter Lightfoot, Stuart Brisby. Front: Christopher Sellars, Alec Cuthbertson, Brian Goforth (PE teacher), John McMurran, Kenneth Calvert. Holding the ball Keith Thompson.
Posted on 2 September 2023 Another photo pinched from Malton and Norton memories. Posted by Andrea Dale in March 2023. Probably 1964 or 1965. Stuart Stead thinks probably Autumn 1965. She names most of the group, and Stuart adds a few more - click on the photo to see.
Posted on 2 September 2023 Another photo pinched from Malton and Norton memories. Posted by Wendy Tasker in August 2023. It is St Michael's School around 1900. Wendy's grandad is second row from top, thirdR from left.
Posted on 13 September 2023 Another gem from Brian Botterill, posted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . A little creased, but all the more atmosphere to it as a result. This is what looks like a winning football team. I can just make out 1950-51 on the ball. It has been added to the National School gallery.
Posted on 15 September 2023 Another set of Sixth Form leavers' prom photos have been added to the site, this time from 2004 when the group once again gathered in the market square, Helmsley, before going in to The Feathers for their event. Everyone is named on this photo - click on it to see who they all are.
Posted on 19 October 2023 Lizzie Hunt (Lizzie Stallybrass) contacted me recently to say thanks for the website. She is now living in Zambia with husband Dan and her 3 young boys, having spent 7 years in Jordan and the Middle East (Dan works for the Foreign Office). They have bought a house in Newton in Rawcliffe, so are looking forward to returning "home" in the not too distant future. Her email prompted me to re-vamp the 2003 Sixth Form Leavers page, the year that Lizzie left school. She was able to put a number of names to photos when she contacted me back in 2014. Lizzie is on the right in the purple dress in this photo.
Posted on 20 October 2023 I have updated the page with a few photos from the 2002 leavers do at The Forest and Vale, Pickering. There are only 5, but there are prints from the evening in the school archive somewhere, waiting to be scanned. I have no photos from the events in 1997 - 2001. Does anyone out there have any snaps to add to the archive? A scan would be very much appreciated.
Posted 22 October 2023 A photo posted by Jim Rooney on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page in April 2023. A little research in the April 2005 Newsletter suggests it is a Year 11 football training afternoon organised by James Staff (in the centre), involving former Malton student and York City player at the time, Darren Dunning. Ben Boothman, Ross Harrison, Darren Dunning, Oliver Peck, Sam Gilderdale amongst others are in the photo.
Posted 24 October 2023 Two photos sent to me by a lady from Norfolk, Joanna Hurst, who found them at an auction sale in Watton, alongside a photo of her grandmother age 13. No apparent connection to Malton - her grandmother went to The Convent of the Sacred Heart in Swaffham. Joanna kindly donated the originals, which will go into the School archive after a little repair and attention. I haven't seen the first before, and it is difficult to date. The only member of staff I recognise is Mr Williams on the far left. The second is from 1925, clearly dated. Margaret Paulin lent me a copy of this one to scan some years ago, so it has been on the website in the Panoramics section for some time, though incorrectly dated 1926. They are also saved as pdf copies for anyone wanting to inspect in a little more detail 1920s roll, and 1925 roll
Posted 28 October 2023 I don't normally cover current day events at Malton School, leaving that to the Malton School website, but it seems appropriate to mention a recent online publication of the latest Maltonian. This is a 26 page edition, in electronic form only, available to read as a flip book , or download as a pdf.
This prompted me to update the news index on this site, and there is now a page covering the changes to the web news pages over the years (1999-2023), and the newsletters (1980, 1999-2023).
Posted 17 December 2023 On a recent visit to the School I was invited to have a look at changes underway in Room 40, East Wing. In recent years this had served as a computer room, but is being changed to a Sixth Form study area, incorporating a mezzanine floor to make use of the height of the room. Originally this was the Grammar School Hall, until the 1959 extensions took place and a new hall and gymnasium was built, then it became the library until 2000, when it changed to a computer laboratory. The development is being funded from a legacy left to the school by former student Sheila Pratt. I took this opportunity to update all pages relating to Shiela Pratt, Room 40 and the 1959 extensions.
