MGS Hockey 1937-8
Posted 14 September 2022 A photo posted by Howard Campion on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page in September 2022. It is a press clipping from 1984, with names, sent to the press by Mary Moon, remembering the 1937-8 Grammar School hockey team. It has been added to the 1930s gallery

Posted 14 September 2022 One of a number of photos added to the Other School Groups gallery. This was spotted on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page and is of a 1926 class with three "standards" (year groups).

Frank Masser
Posted 19 September 2022 I came across this photo of Frank Masser and his family on M&N Memories. So many photos in the Malton Grammar School archive are stamped with Massers Malton, that I felt there should be a page in tribute to Mr Masser. I have put together what facts I can glean on a tribute page to Massers of Malton. There is also an obituary for Ian Masser, who died in 2021.

Posted 19 Sept. 2022 Prompted by this 1982-2022 reunion on 3 September, I have upgraded the Reunions page to the new format. There are also 7 photographs from this 2022 reunion added to the webite on a separate page

1944 Malton Grammar School Form V
1944 Malton Grammar School Form V
Posted 12 December 2022 A photo emailed by Dan Inman, from his aunt Margaret Matthews (Margaret Inman), who died in November 2022. She is in the middle row of the photo. The photo has previously been sent in by Ray Metcalfe, who is also in the photo, but this one has all the names written out on the back. A couple are a little difficult to fully decipher, but I have done my best in the 1940s gallery.

1974 The Demon of Adachigahara
Posted 16 October 2022 I spotted what looks like a press photo, posted on the Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page by Jonathan Fawcett back in 2018. The cast and musicians of The Demon of Adagachigahara, a Cantata for children's chorus and orchestra by Ted Hughes, based on a Japanese folk tale. There is also a picture of the production in action on the 1970s gallery page.

Posted 18 October 2022 I have put together a tribute page in memory of Gordon Lythe, a.k.a. Klondyke Bill, the all-in wrestler in the 1960s and 70s, who lived in Old Malton 1942 - 1979, and was a former student of one of the Malton Schools in his day, probably the National School on St Michael's Street (there are conflicting reports in the press clippings).

All reports describe him as a gentleman, a gentle giant full of kindness, in contrast to his wild man persona in the ring. There are some photos, memories, and news clippings about the big man, courtesy of Malton and Norton Memories, and WrestlingHeritage.co.uk.

Malton 6th form last day 1994
Posted 20 October 2022 I spotted 3 photos of the 1992-4 Malton School 6th form on their last day at school on Malton and Norton Memories. They were posted by Christine Lamb, whose daughter Rachael is in the photos. I believe the theme for the day was dressing in bad taste.

Posted 21 October 2022 I have now converted all the main gallery pages to the new format, the latest being the 1920s and pre-1920s galleries. The 1920s includes 30 photos of the Girl Guides, at that time an integral part of school life. I have also updated the other Guides photos we have from the 1930s onwards, including a new photo of the National Service Parade in Malton market place, 1939.

1984 Cheque presentation Malton School
Posted 22 October 2022 A photo added to the 1980s gallery. Posted by Jim Rooney on M&N Memories. Names mentioned include Rebecca Pay, Phillipa Knowlson, Beverley Ernshaw, Emma Capstick, Alison Goforth, Alison Taylor (same person?). Stanley Griffiths is the man receiving the cheque. Suggestions are that it is a 6th form group.

Posted 22 October 2022 I have added this photo to the 1940s gallery, though it could be early 1950s. High jump on Sports Day at Malton Grammar School. Posted on M&N Meories by Charles Harrison in 2019. Any information welcome.

1971 Malton Grammar School Dance
Posted 22 October 2022 A photo added to the 1970s gallery. Malton Grammar School dance, 1971. Posted on M&N Memories by Walter Warren in 2017. Nick Pearce, Walter Warren, Keith Challan, Billy Hall, Karen Muse, Mark Dodsworth. All from Malton Grammar circa 1971. Walter now lives in Melbourne - he contacted me way back in 2000 in the early days of this website project. Jan Briggs commented on the photo that her brother Billy Hall sadly die aged 33 in 1987.

Posted 20 November 2022 Philip Hall sent me a scan of a 1935 panoramic photo with the whole school gathered. This came from him sorting through photos recently with his grandma, Gwen Hall (Gwen England), who is now aged 101. Gwen was a pupil at MGS in the 1930s, having won a scholarship from Gilling East school. As a result of this photo being sent, I have updated and improved access to all the whole school panoramic photos we have, from the 1920s to the 1960s.

Posted 12 December 2022 A 3-page leaflet from 1936 which looks like a summary of the 1935 prospectus we have in the archive, probably issued to new and prospective recruits. It was scanned and emailed by Philip Hall along with his grandmother's photo (see 20 November below). The badge is interesting, but I haven't been able to trace its origin. The wheat and barrels suggest a connection with Malton's brewing past.

There is a reminder that the Grammar School was a fee-paying school at this time - 4 guineas per term, with text books £1 to 30/-, Games subscription of 1/6 per term, and 3/- for a school cap.

Posted on 14 December 2022 Spotted on M&N Memories, posted by Brian Freer in 2016. Diane Freer suggests names: Back row: Lynda Abbey, Barbara Chopping, Eileen Milestone, Judith Leggett, Kathleen Mason, Margaret McClaren, Miss Cryer (teacher). Front row: Julia Gatenby, Ann Morton, Diane Ledingham, Vivienne Ellis, Denise Wilford ? A number of names match the more formal 1961 team photo on the MCM gallery page, so this is probably around 1961. Is Vivienne Ellis Viv Rhodes?"

Annual Celebration trophies
Posted on 16 December 2022 The annual Celebration Evening for Key Stage 4 and 5 students took place yesterday evening, and as usual I provided individual trophies for the winning students. It was the 24th such evening - I introduced the first one to the annual school calendar in 1999. More details and photographs of the individual trophies can be found over on my woodturning website, www.oldfern.co.uk. Further details about Celebration Evenings are available on this website.
