Sports Day Boys' Javelin Record
Posted on 15 November 2025
Tim Ibbotson emailed me to comment on his long-standing Sports Day record for the Year 10 Boys Javelin: " It’s coming up 30 years now and it’s still there even with Oliver Lamb throwing further in year 9 than I did in year 10, this year was a bitter sweet check, as I was hoping he would achieve a clean sweep of all years. But still pleased I hold it. "
Tim now works in IT Security, having achieved a BSc Hons in Information Technology with Computing, (despite achieving a D in GCSE IT "due to laziness").
Always good to hear from former students, and good to know things like the Sports Records continue to be of interest.
1959 Northern Echo
Posted on 25 October 2025
Howard Campion sent in a newspaper clipping from the Northern Echo, November 1959. It has a photo of Elizabeth Bowman receiving her GCE certificate from Ian Mackinnon, at the first Speech Day held in the new Grammar School Hall. It also reports on a scheme to allow transfer of pupils between the County Modern and Grammar School, through extended use of the 13-plus exam, and on the new extension to the Old Grammar School buildings.
I have taken the opportunity to update the news clippings index page to the new website format.
I have also updated 60 biographies and tributes to various staff, students and others connected with the School's history. Also some Memories of former staff and students.
Children In Need Update
Posted on 19 October 2025
With Children in Need approaching, it seemed appropriate to update the section relating to it on the website. I have added photos from 2008 and 2009 (though there weren't many taken in these years), and also updated the Children in Need index to the responsive format. There are photos from 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 on the site, with a couple more years to follow.
Charity Events
Posted on 13 October 2025
More work on the Comic Relief and Sports Relief pages, updating them from archive pages to the responsive format most of the site is now in. All the years that I have photos for from are now updated: 1989, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012. There is still work to do on the Children In Need pages, but they are available in the old archive format for now.
Charity Events
Posted on 1 October 2025
I have been updating the index page to a number of charity events held at the School over the years - Children in Need, Comic Relief, Sport Relief and sponsored walks. There is still a little more to do on the archive pages, but the index - with photos - is now available.
Art Exhibitions 2001 - 2025
Posted on 29 September 2025
I spotted this photo of this year's winners of the Emma Howard Memorial Art Prize on the main Malton School website, which prompted me to look back at other years. I had not updated the winners list since 2018, and the Art Prize page was in the old format. With thanks to Janet Burrows at the School for providing an updated list and a few photos, the Annual Art Exhibition page is now more up to date. I will try and find photos of the winners from 2015 - 2022. I have also refreshed two pages of pictures from the 2008 exhibition, giving a glimpse of the kind of work on show at these evenings.
Sports Day Photos 2011
Posted on 9 September 2025
Having just updated the 2025 Sports Day records, I thought it a good idea to add some more Sports Day photos, this time from 2011. A selection of 64 pictures of races, field events, officials and the crowd. An index to Sports Day photos since the 1930s is available.
Sports Day Results 2025
Posted on 3 September 2025
Gareth Edwards kindly sent me the 2025 Sports Day Results, which has allowed me to update the Sports Day Records page, and the overall Sports Day Results page. There were 5 records broken this year - Boys: Y8 800m:
Malton National School
Posted on 3 September 2025
A photo of Stan Grice with a group of children at Malton National School in the 1950s has been on the website since 2009, when it was loaned to me by Ann Petch, Stan's daughter. In 2025 it appeared on Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page, which resulted in a complete list of names being provided by Pom (Peter) Smithson. Diane Freer and Pom actually visited me at school in 2009 and gave me a list of names for the photo, but somehow it never got onto the website. All the names are now attached to the photo.
Lightwater Valley
Posted on 5 August 2025
Rewards Days were introduced by Rob Williams in 2007. Almost the whole school (those who qualified for a reward) were bussed out to either Lightwater Valley or Flamingoland for a day near the start of term in September. Over 100 photos of the 2011 Lightwater Valley trip have been posted on the site.
A64 Barton Hill
Posted on 5 August 2025
Another photo of the A64 under construction back in 1977-9, spotted on M&N Memories Facebook page. The Memories site also has a link to a short cine film of the A64 bypass construction available on YouTube.
Terry Dyson
Posted on 26 June 2025
Prompted by a number of photos of Terry Dyson, (Malton Grammar School 1946-52, Tottenham Hotspur 1955-1965) spotted on Malton and Norton Memories page recently, I have compiled a page with all the photos and biographical notes I could find in the archive, together with an extensive interview from the 1961 July Maltonian. One of the photos is the 1952 Malton team posted below on 25 February - have a look at a little more detail.
Year 11 Prom 2011
Posted on 13 June 2025
It must be prom season at school at the moment, so I thought I would add another year's celebration of the end of Year 11 to the website, this time photos from the Year 11 Prom 2011. There are about 120 photos available, complementing those from previous years available from the Year 11 Prom Index page.
Reunions 1991 & 1995
Posted on 26 May 2025
Some photos spotted on Malton and Norton Memories recently. Sue Neal posted the 1991 photos, Judy Evans the 1995. Both are of Malton County Modern former students, and also some staff in the 1995 set.
There are more photos from the 1991 Reunion and the 1995 Reunion, and an index page for all Reunion photos.
Sports Day 2010
Posted on 13 May 2025
Some photos from the Sports Day in 2010. Possibly the first time we had music playing through the afternoon?
Have a look at the general Sports Day index page.
Yorkshire Dales Trip 1998
Posted on 7 May 2025
I bumped in to Sam Etherington yesterday when looking for a new car at K M Barkers in Malton. It prompted me to update the page of photos from a 1998 trip to the Yorkshire Dales, when we stayed at Malham Youth Hostel with a group of Year 10 students - those who were not on the geography field trip.
Norton Swimming Baths
Posted on 15 April 2025
I have added a page of photos of Norton Swimming Baths, and notes about their history, from posts on Malton and Norton Memories Facebook page by Dave Preston in March 2025. There are also lots of memories of the freezing cold baths in the open air days.
Easter Shows
2011 and 2012
Posted on 31 March 2025
Having been to watch Malton School's excellent latest Easter Show, We Will Rock You, last week, I thought I would look back to the last Easter Shows that I have pictures from, before I left in 2012. We were still having "theme nights" at that time, and in 2012 TV and advertising, a rather loose category that allowed a wide mix of items to be included. In 2011 Disney Night provided a more defined theme.
1952 Malton Grammar School Football XI
Posted on 27 February 2025
A photo spotted on Malton and Norton Memories Facebok page, posted by Jo Bower. It was already in our archive, and on the 1950s gallery page, donated by Rosie Taylor in 2017, but the photo posted gives the names of all the players, which I have added to this site.
Jo also posted some notes that came with the photo. These are from The Maltonian, and describe the successful team as one of the best the school had - won 17, lost 3 in the 1951-2 season. There is a player by player report on the team, probably written by Mr Rolls. For example:
Goal - Bower: a stylish keeper, agile and intelligent in his distribution of the ball.
Full backs - Flynn: very good with his head, an adequate tackler with a quick eye for an opening for a ground pass to an unmarked half back or forward. Read: A sure kick with a good tackle - time and again his speed in interception and recovery have relieved dangerous situations.

St Mary's C of E Primary School, Old Malton
Posted on 9 February 2025
A photo spotted on Malton and Norton Memories Facebok page - houses that were formerly St Mary's C of E Primary School in Old Malton. Dave Preston posted some memories of attending the school, which I have put in the Maltonians' 'Memories section of this website.
Filling station at Eden Park, Malton
Posted on 9 February 2025
A photo spotted on Malton and Norton Memories - showing the construction of a new filling station at the Eden Park development, just off the A64 bypass. There are more Eden Park development photos on this website.
Malton Grammar School 1962 and 1967
Posted on 29 January 2025
Two photos spotted on Malton and Norton Memories - Mr Pay's form in 1962, and the Lower 6th with Mr Rolls in 1967. Both look to be from an official albums, a 1962 photo album, and a 1967 photo album. I don't have any other photos from a 1967 album, and only a few from 1962 - there must be more out there? Please send copies if you have any. Some names are provided, though not necessarily all correct.
Malton School Sports
Posted on 27 January 2025
90 photos from Malton School Sports Day, 2009. I have also updated and improved an Index to Sports Days, Boys Sports Teams, and Girls Sports Teams, and an index to Malton School Sports generally, throughout the yeas from 1911 - 2009.
