The Maltonian Photo Gallery - panoramic photographs 1930s

It was possible to get the whole school on one photograph with a panoramic photo camera. It is supposed to be possible for someone to appear on both ends - by running from one end to the other whilst the camera rolls across the gathered crowd - but I haven't yet found one where this is the case. I have heard that these were taken every other year, alternating with group and form photos, but the dates don't quite bear this out.

The photos are quite long, and therefore not easy to scan: typically requiring three A4 scans. These scans have then been digitally stitched back together - some less seamlessly than others! There is also the problem that some are torn or creased from being rolled up over many years.

Originals are stored rolled up in tubes in the Maltonian archive in School, or in their wood and glass frames where these exist.

The photos are too long to fit on the screen without making them tiny, so they have been converted to pdf files. With the usual pdf reader you can then enlarge to suit, and scroll in any direction.

Panoramics of the whole school were taken from the 1920s to the 1960s. No formal school photos appear to have been taken in the 70s and 80s. From the mid-90s onwards photos of the whole of Year 11 were taken, and photos of year 7 form groups.

A photo scanned, stitched together digitally and emailed to me by Phil Hall in November 2022. He found it when sorting through photos with his grandma, Gwen Hall, (Gwen England), who was 101 at the time. She was a pupil at MGS in the 1930s, having won a scholarship from her local school at Gilling East.
