1834 Advert for a Schoolmaster

1834 Advert for a School Master
1834 Advert for a School Master

An advert for a schoolmaster was placed in the Yorkshire Gazette on 2 August 1834 by the inhabitants of Old Malton, without consultation with the Archbishop of York. The letter indicates that the Archbishop had in fact appointed someone very recently, so this is quite a rebellious move by the inhabitants. It asks for teaching of English, Writing and Arithmetic, which are not part of the Foundation requirements - only Latin, Greek and Hebrew are specified.

A list of masters taken from Nigel Hudleston's book, A History of Malton and Norton, includes Revd W J Travis, 1834 - 1834, MA Trinity Coll. Cambridge, who "declined to teach at the school". A copy of a letter from the Archdeacon Todd, probably made by WIlliam Pound, indicates this would probably been in early March 1834. Travis could be the Archbishop's appointee referred to in the advert. The Revd. William Lonsdale is listed as serving from 1834 - 5, before resigning, to be succeeded by Revd William Pound.

Old Malton School

A Master is now wanted for this school.

By the Deed of Endowment the Master is required to teach "Grammar & other knowledge & Godly learning," he is also "to be conveniently seen(?) in the Hebrew, Greek, and Latin tongues."

The Master will be required by himself or another to teach English, Writing, & Arithmetic, to the sons of Persons resident in Old Malton, gratis.

The Master will have the opportunity of taking Boarders into his House, & day Scholars from New Malton, & other adjoining townships on such terms as he pleases.

The stipend is 92£ per annum in fixed money payments, there is a small field also belonging to the School which is now let for six guineas per annum & the Herbage of the church yard.

The Master’s House is a roomy substantial building, in good repair, divided into many apartments & sufficient for the accommodation of 25 or 30 boarders, there are also many convenient outbuildings, & a good Garden.

A Master has been lately appointed by His Grace the Archbishop of York, but the inhabitants conceive the right of appointment is vested in them, & they are determined to exercise such right.

The Deed of Endowment does not require that the Master should be a clergyman.

Applications to be made to the Overseers & churchwardens of Old Malton

1st August 1834

Response from the Archbishop of York

1834 Advert -response from Archbishop of York

Two days after the advert appeared, the inhabitants received a stern letter from the Archbishop (via a secretary) expressing his surprise and displeasure at the advert, though not actually saying what he intended to do.

A reasonable scan of the letter from the Archbishop is available.
