The Milton Rooms
Posted on 9 October 2026
Howard Campion sent me an article in October 2026 about the Milton Rooms, the site of Malton Grammar School speech days from 1951-1958, and also the discos that so many Malton School students attended until they ceased in 2000, were briefly resurrected, but then finished for good in 2002. The article on the Milton Rooms is available on this site
Sports Day Records
July 2026
Posted on 13 September 2026
Gareth Edwards kindly passed on his spreadsheets for the 2026 sports day at the end of term. I have updated the Sports Day Records pages to reflect the changes. There were 9 records broken this year, including three which have stood for over 30 years: R Harrison's Boys' Y10 Shot Put record of 12.01 m, set in 1990; John Parnaby's Boys' Y10 Discus record of 31.90 m which he set in 1995 (I remember watching him do it!), and Kirkham House's Y7 Girls' 4 x 100m which has stood since 1973!
THe Individual Winners table has been updated, as has the overall House Team winners table.
Terry Dyson
1935 - 2026
Posted on 24 August 2026.
Terry died in August 2026, aged 91. An obituary of Terry Dyson appears on the Tottenham Hotspur website. Terry was a Malton Grammar School student 1946 - 1952, and went on to win the FA Cup with Tottenham Hotspur in 1961, doing the double that year, and winning the European Cup Winners Cup in 1963 - the cup he is pictured with here 50 years on in 2013.
There are more biographical details about Terry in the Biographies section of the website.
Maltonians magazines
Posted on 13 August 2026
Jack Foster, an A level student at the School, contacted me regarding his summer holiday activity. Headteacher Rob Williams has engaged him to scan all the Maltonian magazines in order that they exist as digital copies. All 126 editions, from 1918 to 1971, plus 6 New Maltonians and the Nainotlams. Hopefully they will appear on this website once Jack sends them to me or arranges for me to collect them somehow. I have replied to him thanking him for his work, and am very much looking forward to further communication with him about the project. Watch this space!
Old Malton National School
Posted on 13 August 2026.
Jackie from Reighton sent in this fascinating photo of Old Malton National School, which has her great grandfather John Thomas Parkinson in the picture on the far right. He was a schoolteacher at the school. I don't know where the Old Malton National School was. Research for my book on the History of Malton School says there were "a number of National Schools in Malton" at the turn of the century, with a girls' school in Wheelgate and a boys' school on Old Maltongate being mentioned, and a "further development" between Greengate and Maltongate - perhaps this school, which clearly shows a mixed sex and mixed age group.
Updated 14 August 2026
Further research appears to confirm that Old Malton National School and St Mary's C of E School are one and the same. Apparently the National School name was dropped after the 1902 Education Act (the Balfour Act) when Local Education Authorities were established to take control of elementary education. The National Society for Promoting Religious Education relied on donations and Church funding, whereas after 1902 LEAs were permitted to fund non-religious education, and the National Schools transitioned into state schools, usually taking the name of the local parish church as in the case of Old Malton. The National School name did hang on in public usage, as with the Senior School in St Michael's Street, Malton, but it was not a formal or authorised name.
There are many photos of other schools around Malton on the site.
Web access problems
Posted on 1 July 2026
Once again, apologies for anyone who has been looking for updates since April. Problems with accessing the website to upload new material. This site is a subdomain of the main Malton School website, and as such I do not have direct control over the hosting of the site. Although I recovered access back in April, this proved to be only temporary and once again I have no access. As a result, I have moved the website to a hosting domain that I do have control of, here at maltonians.oldfern.co.uk
At present I write this site using coding, mainly html and php, with css and js thrown in. I have been looking at the future of the website: to remain a useful historical resource without my involvement it needs to change so that it can be maintained by someone not necessarily familiar with coding, probably run as a WordPress site, like the main Malton School website. I have had some preliminary discussions with Rob Williams, the headteacher, and with another member of school staff who uploads material to the main school site. Progress towards a solution is slow, but not without hope.
10 Years of Theatre
Posted on 30 June 2026
Just before Easter 2026 I was pleased to attend the annual school show - Chicago this year. With two granddaughters performing in the show, how could I not? An excellent evening of high quality music and dance, superbly staged in the East Wing Drama studio-come-theatre. They had on sale a booklet charting 10 years of shows, which is shared here.
A database of drama productions over the years from 1944 to the present is available on the site.
1960s Exam Papers
Posted on 23 April 2026
Clive Duggleby emailed to tell me he had unearthed some of his exam papers from his years at Malton Grammar School (1959 - 66). He has kindly scanned them and sent them to me. I have posted them on the site, with an index on the Exams page of the documents section of the site. Coincidentally, Clive appears in the photo of Norton Boys School 1958, listed below! Front row, third from the right.
A gallery of Other School Groups around the Malton area is available on the site.
Norton Boys School 1958
Posted on 22 April 2026
I spotted this photo on Malton and Norton Memories in April 2018, posted by Larraine Williams. Richard Hall, who is in the photo, thinks it was something to do with dwarves for Mrs Keeney - notice the pipes and hats. Clive Duggleby agrees: From what I can remember, the play was about a village (perhaps of dwarves?) which decided to have a communal stewpot of soup. All villagers were invited to put something into the stewpot but, when finished the only thing in the stewpot was a solitary onion. It transpired that every villager save one had added a pinch of salt, since it was well known that you need salt to flavour soup - the only exception was the one (played by David Prest, I think) who put an onion in.
All names are provided, written on the back of the photo. I recognise a number of the boys' names who went on to Malton Grammar School.
All kind of other documents gallery of Other School Groups are available on the site.
Newspaper clippings 1957
Posted on 21 April 2026
In December 2025 Howard Campion posted two news clips on Malton and Norton Memories Facebook site, one of a group in a Christmas play at Malton Senior School 1957, the other of a prizegiving for Malton Grammar School, plus notes from the headmaster's speech.
An index to all newspaper clippings in the archive is available on the site.
Professor Richard Wilson
Posted on 21 April 2026
Back in March Tony Kirby emailed to tell me that former Grammar School pupil Richard Wilson had passed away. Richard was at school 1950 - 1957, and went on to the University of Leeds and then a career as a historian. I have put an obituary from the Norfolk Records Office in the Tributes section of the site.
Web access problems

Apologies for anyone who has been looking for updates in the last three months. Since the turn of the New Year, I have had problems with accessing the website to upload new material. This site is a subdomain of the main Malton School website, and as such I do not have direct control over the hosting of the site - the School has changed its hosting provider. I have been waiting for a resolution to be found - which I think is now active. I will be uploading new material from Jan - April 2026 in the next few days. Apologies if some of the links do not work immediately. There is quite a lot to get through and test.
Updated 21 April 2026
I think all the updates since January 2026 are now in place. In particular the restructured Biographies index and the Tributes index. These are now in alphabetical order, and all links to 18 pages of biographies, and 27 pages of tributes and obituaries are now working. They have also all been upgraded to the new responsive format, and improved thumbnail pictures have been implemented.
To complete the review of pages about people, I have also upgraded 45 pages of memories of the School, its staff and its students.
George Nicholson
Posted on 26 March 2026
I arranged a visit with the curator at York Art Gallery to view a portrait of George Nicholson, and two of his sketchbooks. He was a Malton artist in the 19th century, and the main connection to Malton School was his painting of the Old Grammar School, versions of which hang in St Mary's church in Old Malton, and in Malton School. York Art Gallery are in the process of digitising their archives, with the intention of making them available to all online. Many of his sketches are valuable records of architectural and landscape features in the 1800s. He is buried in Old Malton graveyard.
Bernadette Hoult's
French exercise book
Posted on 2 March 2026
Along with Maltonian magazines and a news clipping, Hugh Wolfson passed on Bernadette Hoult's French exercise book. Written some time in the early 1960s.

The Maltonian 124, September 1969
Posted on 13 February 2026
Howard Wolfson sent me a number of Maltonians, a 1959 panoramic photo, and a news clipping from the Malton Gazette, which gives an obituary for Philip Taylor. They all belonged to his wife, who at Malton Grammar School was Bernadette Hoult, and he has passed them on to become part of the school archive. I have scanned The Maltonian Number 124, September 1969, and this is now available and included in the index to The Maltonian.
Philip Taylor
Posted on 16 February 2026
An obituary of Philip Taylor has been added - both a scan of the newspaper article from 22 October 1971, and a transcript of the article. This has been added to a biography provided by Mr Taylor's daughters, Rosemary and Gillian, in 2008.
As a result I have restructured the Biographies index and the Tributes index. These are now in alphabetical order, and all links to 18 pages of biographies, and 27 pages of tributes and obituaries are now working. They have also all been upgraded to the new responsive format.
To complete the review of pages about people, I have also upgraded 45 pages of memories of the School, its staff and its students.
About the Maltonians Website
Welcome to the third incarnation of the Maltonian Website. Work started on making it into a "responsive" website in March 2022, as well making it a cleaner, simpler site to browse and navigate. With over 800 pages to convert, this could take some time! The previous version was started in October 2013, and before that the first site appeared in 1999.
During the period of upgrading browsers will come across old pages, but hopefully the key index pages will all have been converted. It may be that some old, infrequently visited pages will remain in an archive-only format.
The site provides an archive for former students and staff, as well as advice on how to help the current students at Malton School, and a reference point to tell its story over so many years.

Site Manager
The site was first created by Steve Fearnley, former deputy head at Malton School 1993-2012. He continues to develop and manage the site in his retirement, with a new mobile-friendly look being developed in 2022.
Photographs
The Maltonian Web aims to display all the photographs which are in the school's archive. These start in 1911 and go up to the present day. There is a policy of not including named individual photos of current students.
Documents
Many archive documents have already been converted to a web format. These appear on the site in that format, whilst many more have been scanned as pdf documents and included as a downloadable resource.
Make a bequest
The School has benefited from donations and bequests in the past, most notably from Alma Collier which allowed the creation of a new library, and more recently from Alex Joannidis (in 2014) and Sheila Pratt (in 2015). A number of commemorative prizes and trophies have been created. If you would like to make a bequest or a donation, please get in touch with myself or the headteacher about how you can help.
The Maltonian
The Maltonian was a school magazine published by Malton Grammar School each term, from 1917 until 1971. Most copies still survive in the school archive. The Maltonians website first appeared in 1999. It was created by Malton School's deputy head at the time, Steve Fearnley, and was intended to exploit the relatively new phenomenon of growing internet access to share memories of the School's past.
The old school website, created by Graham Magee, and the Maltonians site were suspended in 2011, when the School bought a commercially produced website.
The Maltonians Website
This third version seeks to continue the work started in 1999, acting as a point of contact and preserving records of Malton School, Malton Grammar School, Malton County Modern and Malton National School.
